The Best Fall Stays: Autumn Escapes Worth the Journey

A small, considered list of autumn escapes — country houses, lakeside lodges and quiet inns where the season is the reason to go.

Autumn is the finest season for travel, though few say so. The crowds have gone, the air has cooled, and the world has turned the colour of the inside of a pear. The point of an autumn escape is not to go far but to go somewhere the season is the reason — a place that is better in October than in July.

The Country House

A country-house hotel in the English or Canadian autumn is the original fall stay. Log fires, long dinners, walks through turning woods and a good book by the fire afterwards. Look for the houses that have been houses for a century or more — they know how to receive a guest, and they do not try too hard.

The Lakeside Lodge

A lodge on a northern lake in October is quiet of a kind the city cannot imagine. Mist on the water in the mornings, woodsmoke in the evenings, and a day spent walking before a long, slow supper. Choose somewhere with fewer rooms than you have fingers, and a view of water from the bed.

The Forest Inn

The forest in autumn is the whole point of the season, and a small inn set deep in the trees — the Laurentians, the Rockies, the forests of New England — is the way to see it. Take the room with the porch, the breakfast that is cooked to order, and a trail that begins at the door.

The Vineyard Stay

Vineyard regions are at their most beautiful in autumn — the harvest, the colour, the first cold evenings. A stay among the vines is a stay at the season's source. Book a small estate with rooms, eat what the kitchen is picking, and walk the rows at dusk.

How to Travel

Travel slowly. Take the train where you can; the autumn belongs to the window seat. Stay longer in one place rather than hopping between three. And go mid-week if you are able — the rooms are quieter, the rates kinder, and the season more your own.
